A value painting in charcoal. For pastel, a workable fixative spray alcohol based, or SpectraFix Spray made from Casein. The choice depends on the relative humidity of your painting area.

Make color decisions based on temperature, contrast, add complementary colors to each other for emphasis. Cooler colors stay in background. Start bulding thin layers with NuPastel or a hard pastel crayon.
